The Stilform AEON Pure Pencil is the standard AEON with one thing taken away and, as often happens, the removal is the point. Without the wood veneer band, the aluminium body reads as a single uninterrupted line from end to tip: one material, one colour, no ornament. Underneath it is the same clever pencil, with the same magnetic tip that lifts off and clicks back in a second.

It keeps the full 134.6mm length and 27g weight, so it sits on the desk and in the hand exactly as the original does. The surface is cool and slightly satin under the fingers, the flats stop it rolling, and a graphite tip (HB) comes fitted and ready. If the veneer version is the handsome one, this is the quiet one.

• The sharpener stays in the drawer: The tips swap magnetically, so you never stop to sharpen and never sweep up shavings.
• Graphite or Eternal, your choice: Fit a graphite tip for drawing or the hard-wearing Eternal tip for writing that lasts years, and change between them freely.
