With its lush, arching fronds and naturally spreading habit, Pteris umbrosa, or the Jungle Brake Fern, brings a refreshing tropical feel to shaded spaces. Found growing naturally from southeast Queensland through to Victoria, it thrives along cool stream margins and happily spreads by underground rhizomes to form a soft green carpet over time. Highly versatile, this native fern is perfect for hanging baskets, mass planting as a ground cover, or growing in pots and containers on balconies and patios where its graceful foliage creates a relaxed rainforest atmosphere. It also performs beautifully indoors in bright filtered or indirect light, making it an easy-care choice for adding greenery inside the home. Watering requirements will vary depending on temperature, potting mix, and growing conditions. Indoors, watering approximately every seven days is usually sufficient, though its best to check the soil regularly and water whenever it begins to dry out.
