The Pilot Kakuno Madoromi Fountain Pen takes its name from that drowsy half-hour between sleeping and waking, and the colours behave accordingly translucent, unhurried, closer to weather than to paint. Beneath the softer palette sits the same Kakuno that has quietly converted so many first-time writers: a light resin body, gently faceted grip, and a steel nib with a small smiling face stamped into it.

At eleven grams you stop negotiating with it. The facets settle your fingers into position without ever announcing that they are doing so, and the nib rewards a light hand no pressing, no coaxing it into life. That smiling face is also a compass: when you can see it, the nib is oriented correctly. You stop thinking about the pen rather quickly, which is the highest compliment a first fountain pen can be paid.

Built for Daily Use

• Comfortable for the long stretch: You write for an hour without your grip tightening, because the facets hold your fingers where they belong rather than leaving you to remember.
• Ready every single time: You never scribble in a corner to wake it up. It writes from the first contact with the paper, whether you picked it up this morning or last week.
• Happy to be carried: You keep it in a bag without ceremony. The cap seals firmly, so it doesn’t dry out between uses or leak into the rest of your pencil case.

This pen comes supplied with a Pilot ink cartridge, ready to write straight away. If you’d like to use bottled ink, a compatible Pilot CON-40 converter is available separately at The Journal Shop.
