The Penco Composition Notebook (L) borrows its looks from the American school composition book and its build from Japan. Eighty sheets of 7mm ruled paper, with blue lines and a red margin, sit on a spiral binding between stiff card covers. On the back you’ll find conversion tables, for the day you need to know how many ounces are in a litre.

The spiral lets the book fold right back on itself, so it takes up half the room on a crowded desk or a knee. The card cover is firm without being heavy and has a pleasantly dry, papery feel. Nostalgia is usually decorative; this one is useful.

Built for Daily Use

• Folds back flat: You write on one page at a time with the rest folded out of the way, even on a train tray.
• Neat without trying: The margin and 7mm lines quietly tidy your handwriting, so your notes always look composed.
• A cover that survives the bag: The stiff card keeps your pages flat and unbent after weeks of being carried about.
