Introduced in the late 1970s, the Mitsubishi Boxy 100 Ballpoint Pen has become a quietly iconic presence in Japanese classrooms and offices. Instantly recognisable by its flat-sided barrel and unmistakable orange side button, it is a design that balances practicality with a certain mischievous charm.

Press the top button and the tip extends with a satisfying click. Press the orange side button and the mechanism releases, popping the rear button back up with surprising enthusiasm. Students have long appreciated this feature not merely for its engineering, but for its desk-side sporting potential involving paper balls and small rolls of tape. One suspects productivity occasionally took a brief pause.

Happily, the writing performance is equally dependable. The ballpoint cartridge offers above-average smoothness for its class, dries quickly, and performs best on smooth paper. Ideal for everyday note-taking, lists, and margin annotations, its a pen that earns its cult reputation through both character and competence.
