The Hightide 4-Colour Ballpoint Pen is the schoolroom four-colour pen, grown up. Four ink colours sit inside one slim steel barrel, and a click brings whichever you want down to the tip. It is designed in Japan and made in Italy.

The steel barrel is cool when you first pick it up and warms quickly in the hand, with a reassuring weight that cheaper plastic versions never quite manage. Each colour soon finds its job: one for appointments, one for corrections, one for anything urgent and one for everything else. It is not refillable, so each colour is used to the very last line.

Clever Details That Count

• Colour-coding without the clutter: Your diary and notes fall into order with one pen rather than four rattling in a pocket.
• A click you come to enjoy: You find yourself switching colours for the small pleasure of it, which does wonders for a to-do list.
• Weight that never feels flimsy: The steel body sits steadily between the fingers through a long afternoon of notes.
